1. Go to the EndNote 8 menu, select Preferences.



2. Then, choose the "EndNote Defaults" button.



3. Click on "Display fonts" then choose the "EndNote Defaults" button.

You should now be able to open the reference editing window once again. This should also resolve the "Unexpectedly Quit" error message.

In a few cases, it's actually necessary to completely recreate the preferences for EndNote 8 in order to resolve this problem. If the above does not resolve the problem, then try the following:

Open EndNote 8, then go to the EndNote 8 menu and choose Customizer.

Here, select "uninstall".

Once this is completed, do the following to reset the preferences completely:

1. Go to your OS9 system folder, and open the Preferences folder. Here, pull out all files starting with EndNote (like the EndNote f folder, and any preferences directly in the preferences folder). You can place these files on your desktop. If you do not have any files here, go to the next step.



2. Go to Users:[your login name with the house icon]:Library:Application Support:EndNote



3. Remove all files from this location (you can put them on the desktop- they will be rebuilt when EndNote restarts).



4. Go to Users:[your login name with the house icon]:Library:Preferences.



5. Remove the "EndNote f" folder and the "com.ThomsonResearchSoft.EndNote.plist" file.



6. Restart the computer.



7. Go to Applications, Disk Utility.



8. Open the Disk Utility application.



9. Choose your hard drive, then click the "repair disk permissions" option.



10. Reinstall EndNote from your installer, dragging the EndNote 8 folder to the "Applications" folder.



11. Open EndNote.



12. Go to the EndNote 8 menu, select Preferences.



13. Then, choose the "EndNote Defaults" button.



14. Click on "Display fonts" then choose the "EndNote Defaults" button.



15. Click on the next option down, and click the default button.



16. Do this for each option here.



17. Click Save, and close this window.

Now try to open a new reference or edit an existing reference in EndNote 8.
