Answer: To fix this it is necessary to replace the existing copy of a file called "EN7CWYW.DOT" in your Microsoft Word Startup directory with a newer version of this file.

If you are not sure where the Word Startup folder is located, here is how to find it:

Within Microsoft Word select Tools / Options / File Locations tab, then select "Startup" and click the "Modify" button. Note the path to the Microsoft Word Startup folder. If no path is listed at the bottom of the window, click on the "Look In" dropdown at the top of the window and note the path.

To replace the EN7CWYW.DOT file:

1. Close Word XP (and Outlook, if running).
   
2. Using Windows Explorer or My Computer, go to the Microsoft Word Startup folder (as indicated in Word under Tools/Options/File Locations/Startup). If you cannot find the specified folder, your Windows preferences may be set to hide the folder. In Windows Explorer or My Computer go to Tools / Folder Options / View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files or folders" is selected.
   
3. Within this directory you will find a file called EN7CWYW.DOT. (If you do not see the .dot file extension, go to the Tools menu and select Folder Options / View tab. Uncheck the box that reads “Hide file extensions for known file types?and click OK.) Delete this file and replace it with the new version. 4. Launch Microsoft Word. Now the EndNote keyboard shortcuts should function as expected.
   

We also suggest that you save a copy of the new version of EN7CWYW.DOT in your EndNote program folder (overwriting the existing file) in case you need this file again in the future.

NOTE: This new version of EN7CWYW.DOT will not work properly with older versions of Microsoft Word such as Word 97 and Word 2000. If you are using Word 97 or 2000, use the original version of this file.
