  Data
  • The data set contains 6 variables: F-Career, Son_ID, S_Choice, Famstruc, Race and Intcept.
  • The first variable, F_Career, defines seventeen level-2 units, each being the father's occupation.
  • Son_ID is used to number the sons within each level-2 unit.
  • S_Choice is a dichotomous outcome variable that is defined as follows:
  • S_Choice = 1: Son's current occupation is different from his father's occupation
  • S_Choice = 2: Son's current occupation is the same as his father's occupation
  • The variable Famstruc is family structure, coded 1 in the case of an intact family background, and 2 if the family background was not intact.
  • The fifth variable, Race, is coded 1 in the case of white respondents and 2 in the case of non-white respondents.
  • The father's occupation, F_Career, is coded as follows:
    • 17 Professional, Self-Employed
    • 16 Professional, Salaried
    • 15 Manager
    • 14 Salesman-Non retail
    • 13 Proprietor
    • 12 Clerk
    • 11 Salesman-Retail
    • 10 Craftsman-Manufacturing
    • 9 Craftsman-Other
    • 8 Craftsman-Construction
    • 7 Service Worker
    • 6 Operative-Non manufacturing

  • The data are listed in the file SOCMOB1.PSF in the TUTORIAL folder.

  Analysis
  • Click the Open option from the File menu to load the Open dialog box.
  • Select the PRELIS Data (*.psf) option on the Files of type drop-down list box. 
  • Select the file SOCMOB1.PSF in the TUTORIAL folder.
  • Click on the Open button to open SOCMOB1.PSF in a PSF window.
  • Click on the Linear Model option on the Multilevel menu.
  • Select the Title and Options option on the Linear Model menu to load the Title and Options dialog box.
  • Enter the string 17 Careers of Fathers and Sons (1=diff 2=same) in the Title: string field.
  • Click on the Next button to load the Identification variables dialog box.
  • Select the label F_Career.
  • Click on the Add button of the Level 2 ID Variable section to produce the following Identification variables dialog box.

  • Click on the Next button to load Select Response and Fixed Variables dialog box.
  • Select the label S_Choice.
  • Click on the Add button of the Response Variables section.
  • Select the labels FamStruc and Race.
  • Click on the Add button of the Fixed Variables section to produce the following Select Response and Fixed Variables dialog box.

  • Click on the Next button to load the Random Variables dialog box.
  • Select the labels Intcept, FamStruc and Race.
  • Click on the Add button of the Random Level2 section.
  • Un-check the Intercept check box to produce the following Random Variables dialog box.

  • Click on the Finish button to produce the text editor window for SOCMOB1.PR2.
  • Insert the command SUBPOP=FamStruc Race; as the final command to produce the following text editor window for SOCMOB1.PR2.

  • Click on the Run PRELIS button to produce the following text editor window for SOCMOB1.OUT.
