LISREL Utility: SPSSIMP.EXE

The program SPSSIMP.EXE is a DOS utility which reads SPSS for WINDOWS .SAV files. From the .SAV file it calculates and stores the following information in ASCII (text) format:

    • The covariance matrix stored under the same name as the .SAV file, but with extension .COV
    • The means of the numeric variables stored under the same name as the .SAV file, but with extension .MEA
    • The standard deviations of the numeric variables stored under the same name as the .SAV file, but with extension .STD
    • The names of the numeric variables stored under the same name as the .SAV file, but with extension .LAB
    • The raw data, sample size and other relevant observation in a file with the extension .RAW

How to use SPSSIMP:

At the DOS prompt type in:

SPPSIMP

The program will prompt the user for the SPSS .SAV file name (do not type the extension .SAV)

For example type in DATA100 ( See accompanying file DATA100.SAV)

Next, the program will prompt the user to select either LISTWISE (=1) or PAIRWISE deletion (=2)

The following files are produced:

DATA100.COV
DATA100.MEA
DATA100.STD
DATA100.LAB
DATA100.RAW

The contents of each file for the PAIRWISE deletion option is given below:

The file DATA100.RAW contains

    • the raw data
    • NCASES_ADJ which is the sample size used to calculate each element of the covariance matrix, for example 59 cases were available for the calculation of COV(CONTIN5,CONTIN1)
    • the number of numeric variables (6 in this case)
    • the Variable names and if available their descriptions.
