EViews 3.1 Information

EViews 3.1 is a previous version of EViews, replacing the earlier version 3.0. With the December 2000 release of EViews 4.0, we are phasing out support for Version 3.1 so that with few exceptions, future revisions to EViews will be made as changes to Version 4.0. Consequently, we strongly recommend that you upgrade to the newer version.

If you have version 3.1, you may update to the latest release of EViews 3.1 by unzipping the contents of the download file into your EViews directory. Current EViews 3.0 users will have to follow the directions provided at the bottom of this page.

Update Notes:

08-29-2001 ( student version )

Fix labeling of axes when performing scatterplots with fit. The labels were removing relevant lag information. Also fix bug in sample processing for the scatterplot fits.

07-11-2001 ( single user | network )

Fix initialization of binary residual exporting for out-of-sample observations.

02-12-2001

There is a syntax issue associated with how Windows handles double- clicking on files (with spaces in the full path) that created some incompatibilities with previous EViews syntax. As a result, the earlier fix for double-clicking conflicted with the method of launching EViews from a command window while automatically running a program file. To launch EViews from a command window, enclose the name of the executable in double quotes (if necessary), and enclose the name of the program name in double quotes (if necessary), followed by any arguments.

Update the student version to this download version.

02-08-2001

Fix problem with opening a workfile by double-clicking. EViews did not properly open workfiles located in a directory containing a space.

01-26-2001

Fix bug in command line option processing for exponential smoothing.

01-18-2001

Fix of out-of-sample initializations in forecasting and fit commands, and out-of-sample static ARCH forecasts.

01-16-2001

The F-test of equality of variance for two series was not displaying properly.  Add df and non-df corrected versions of some equality tests.

10-30-2000

Minor fixes.

06-21-2000

Enable command line options for controlling the number of periods used in exponential smoothing as described in printed documentation.

06-09-2000

Improve handling of floating-point NAs when exporting t-statistics in a program. The problem occurred when equations were not successfully estimated and standard errors for coefficients were NAs. Improve handling of roundoff error when computing sums of series containing only integers.

05-16-2000

The F-test of equality of variance for two series was not displaying properly. Minor fixes to dialogs for ASCII data import.

01-19-2000

Provide updated Census X11 executable and EViews interface to the Census program. The updated Census X11 now allows holiday day adjustments for years from 2000 to 2100. Minor changes to improve convergence behavior of nonlinear ARMA specifications.

01-04-2000

Fix problems with the computation of the Siegel-Tukey nonparametric test for equality of variances of two series.

12-10-99

A number of minor fixes and improvements. Improve store/fetch .db handling when working with untitled objects. Fixed bug when displaying log-scale graphs for series with zero variance. Fixed series output bug when saving results from scatter diagrams (with fit) to subsamples. Improved ordered discrete choice starting values and error messaging. Update FREQ commands to match manual.

11-11-99

Fix minor bug in LOGL estimation where the workfile sample is not always read properly when estimating from the command line. Fix newline handling in ASCII data export where the data are written in transposed form.

11-08-99

Fixed bug in option handling in unit-root tests when tests are specified in difference form. Corrects problems when specifying unit-root tests performed on a differenced auto-series. The bug occurred only if you called the UROOT test on an auto-series from the command line using the old-TSP style UROOT command with a first difference syntax (if you clicked the first difference button in the unit root test dialog, of evaluated the test using EViews syntax, there is/was no problem).

If you called

uroot(c,3) d(x)

the results were correct, while if you called

uroot(c,3) d(x,1)

the results were not correct (the results should be the same since d(x) is equivalent to d(x,1)).

10-28-99 ( supplements )

Update to the EViews database .dll file to handle some problems with DRIPro 5 support. You do not need to download these new database files unless you are a DRI customer who wishes to use DRIPro version 5.

10-15-99

Fix labeling of balanced vs. unbalanced samples in pool and system estimation in certain cases with sample restrictions. This bug has no impact on the estimation results, only in the text labels in the output view.

08-25-99

Improvements to X-11 interface to support year 2000 compliance--disallow holiday adjustment for data spanning the year 2000, and correct Census text output so that it produces correct post-2000 dates. Enhance precision of numeric derivatives for nonlinear regression problems. This change should make no difference for the vast majority of estimated equations. Also add ability to specify global settings for default convergence tolerance and maximum iterations.

While the global settings feature should be self-documentatng, an updated help  system is available which documents this feature.

07-27-99

Update to the EViews database .dll file. You do not need to download the new database files unless you are a DRI customer who wishes to use DRIPro version 5.

07-23-99

New version of the EViews database .dll file supports DRIPro version 5. You do not need to download the new database files unless you are a DRI customer who wishes to use DRIPro version 5. All other users who download the .dll will experience absolutely no changes in the operation of EViews database features. Note that the download file also contains a zip file containing the the example programs and data from the EViews manual.

07-09-99

Changes are made to improve the accuracy of backcasting in MA models of order greater than one. Also corrects a bug that sometimes caused EViews to hang when working with multiple databases.

07-02-99

Made changes to the calculation of FIML standard errors for improved accuracy and to remove spurious error messages.

05-05-99

Fix graph problems when displaying residuals from pool equations with large numbers of cross-sections. Improve space/extension handling in names provided in file dialogs.

04-15-99

Add ability to read semi-annual Aremos-TSD files. Change behavior of wildcard in STORE command ("STORE *") to not store the C and RESID series.

10-09-98

Number of bug fixes to improve stability when working with auto-series in groups. Enhanced handling of samples in forecasting. Modify the parameterization of some of the statistical distribution functions for better consistency. The latter two changes involve change of behavior from the printed documentation and are documented more fully in the updated help system.

Installation Instructions for Update from 3.0 to 3.1:

Before You Begin

You must have a standalone copy of EViews 3.0 or EViews 3.0 Basics, or a network copy of EViews 3.1 already installed on your computer in order to upgrade your EViews Version 3.1. The files available for download are not a complete copy of EViews and cannot be installed directly to a new machine (e.g. - they are not a demonstration version).

Warning: the downloadable executable will only work if you have already installed EViews 3.0 stand alone or EViews 3.1 network version on your system.

Note that only those network users who have previously installed EViews 3.1 from diskette can upgrade version 3.1 over the web. All up-to-date site licenses should have already received their upgrade diskettes. If your site license is not up-to-date, and you wish to obtain EViews 3.1, please contact our office.

To install EViews 3.1 on a new machine, you should first install EViews 3.0 standalone or EViews 3.1 network version from the original program diskettes, then follow the procedure below to upgrade to version 3.1.

The use of version 3.1 in no way changes the licensing arrangements covering the use and distribution of version 3 of EViews. To install and use EViews on a machine, all normal licensing requirements must be met.

Upzipping the Files

First download the upgrade files. There are three zip files required for a full upgrade (with an optional fourth file for documentation):

You will need both of the following files:

EViews 3.1 support files (zipfile containing EViews 3.1 database .dll and a zipfile containing example programs and data - 506K)
EViews 3.1 help system (zipfile containing EViews 3.1 Windows help system - 1301K)

and one of the following:

EViews 3.1 single user version - (zipfile containing EViews 3.1 standalone executable - 1300K )
EViews 3.1 network version (zipfile containing EViews 3.1 network executable - 1300K)

While optional, we also recommend that you download the zipfile containing PDF documentation for the new features of EViews 3.1:

EViews 3.1 (zipped) PDF documentation (zipfile containing full PDF documentation for new features in EViews 3.1, and supplemental documentation for running the  Census X11 program outside of EViews - 1966K)

You must be able to process a zip file. If you do not have the appropriate software, please see our zip tools information page for instructions on how to obtain shareware versions of zip tools.

Because 3.1 contains substantial improvements to 3.0, the procedure for updating is slightly more complicated than usual since more than one file is involved. The same procedure is used to update standalone copies of either EViews 3.0 or EViews 3.0 Basics. To upgrade, you should download the zip file from our web site, then unzip the file into an empty directory. The directory should then contain the following files:

eviews3.exe the EViews 3.1 main executable
ev_dbase.dll the EViews 3.1 database dll
ev3help.hlp the EViews 3.1 help file
ev3help.cnt the EViews 3.1 help contents file
examples31.zip the EViews 3.1 sample workfiles and programs (zipped)
readme31.txt .txt file containing these instructions

Installing the EViews 3.1 Upgrade

To upgrade your existing installation of EViews 3.0 to EViews 3.1 or to upgrade your EViews 3.1, you only need to copy the first four of these files into the directory into which you originally installed EViews (the installer writes to C:\EViews3 by default), overwriting the existing copies of these files from your original installation. (Note that EViews must not be running at the time you copy the files). You must update all the files at once. EViews will not function correctly if only some of the files are replaced.

If you would like to save your previous copy of version 3.0 or 3.1 until you have verified that the new version is correctly installed, simply create a copy of the entire EViews directory and give it a new name, then replace the files in the original directory as documented above. If you wish to keep multiple copies of version 3.0, you must copy all of your .INI, .DLL, and X11 files from the original directory into the new directory.

If you experience problems, you will still be able to execute the earlier version of EViews from the backup directory. You can simply delete the backup directory whenever you please

The file examples31.zip contains a set of sample workfiles and programs which are a replacement for the set originally installed in your EViews Example Files directory. You can unzip this file into any directory and use the workfiles and programs directly, or you can copy them into your Example Files directory, replacing your current files. Note that if you have made changes to the original sample workfiles or programs, you should be careful not to lose any modifications which you would like to keep.

After You've Upgraded

Once you've upgraded your copy of EViews, simply launch the program as usual. You can check to see that the upgrade was successful by selecting Help/About EViews from the main EViews Menu. The version information should read EViews 3.1.

You should be certain to read the "Readme" entry in your help system for the latest notes on EViews.

Documentation

Our updated Help system provides you with on-line access to documentation of all of the new features in EViews 3.1. The "What's New in Version 3.1" entry will point you to all of the new features in your upgrade.

In addition, you may wish to download the zip file containing PDF documentation for the maximum likelihood object. Note that Adobe Acrobat Reader is required to view or print this file so that if you have not already done so, you will need to obtain the free Adobe Acrobat Reader 3.02.
